GHMC uses GIS tools for Swachh Survekshan Hyderabad, Jan 21 (INN): About 120 cutting edge staff of GHMC were involved in a unique mapping exercise facilitated by Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) in connection with Swachh Survekshan 2017.
Circle wise maps were provided to groups of 4 each from each circle. The circle wise teams comprised of Deputy Commissioner, Asst Medical Officer, Sanitary Supervisors. Zonal Commissioners & Additional Commissioners and they provided inputs for the mapping exercise.
The following attribute data was mapped with locations, on the circle maps: Staff shortfall , Door to door collection, User charges, Proportion of total solid waste generated Vs transported daily, Informal Waste Pickers-(survey , ID, and deployment), Sanitation in notified commercial areas, Availability of litter bins at appropriate places in commercial areas, System for collection of Construction & Demolition waste, Where plastics have been used in road preparing/repairing works by the GHMC ; Segregation at source and maintaining the segregation till treatment site. Locations of Bulk Garbage generators. Open Defecation areas, Community Toilet & Public Toilets. Composting units, Identification of Swachha grahis, Publicity and advertisement of Swachh Bharat.
The workshop's main objective was to enable development of a decision support system for planning and operations of all location based services of GHMC
GHMC Commissioner Dr B Janardhan Reddy said that it GIS / Mapping was a very useful tool which went beyond the Swachh Survekshan campaign. Citing several examples he said it would be possible to identify gaps in service delivery, optimization of use of Manpower, Swachh autos / Tricycles as also monitor the whole sanitation infrastructure. He also said that GHMC will train its senior officers to fully use the potential of GIS in all aspects of Municipal administration.
All the teams from 30 circles mapped the various civic infrastructure parameters primarily from a Swachh Survekshan perspective, but also appreciated the need for a tool like GIS for efficient planning. It was a refreshing change to see GHMC staff pouring over maps and understanding aspects of orientation, scale and distance.
Zonal Commissioners, including Harichandana, Raghu Prasad, Srinivas Reddy, Gangadhar and Shankariah, Additional Commissioner (H&S) Ravi Kiran and Executive Engineer (SWM) Srinivas Reddy tool active part in the workshop.
