With a 12-year old boy, a messy room full of tiny cars, Lego’s, and action figures is par for the course. But hell, I'm so sick of it!
So here's the dilemma -- do I keep yelling at him to clean it up, do I clean it up, what do I do?
Also for you moms without a 'teen' or pre-teen or whatever you call them, don't think for a minute they would rationally be willing to throw away their 853 stuffed animals now that they're nearly old enough to drive (they think they are) ... NO! They are at an age where they are holding on so tight to their babyhood AND pushing so hard to get into their teen hood, all the toys and souvenirs of both eras matter so much to them. He won't let me toss a thing! He wouldn't dream have letting go or getting rid of any of his precious stuff. What's A Mother To Do?
When I started finding the rotten bananas in the corners and the dirty underwear in the bathroom, I reached my limit. So new rule: if I come home from work and find any food trash anywhere or any of his clothes deposited anywhere on any floor in the house -- he doesn't go anywhere or have anyone over the next day. No discussion, no negotiation.
So far after one week he's been grounded now twice. But for the past couple of days the floors have been clean. I'll take that as progress.
