We at the HQ the chief of Staff called me and asked me “ Murty! We have received from HQ Eastern command a big formational sign to be fixed atop our Cinema theatre the only entertainment for all ranks including officers being an operational location, So fixing is given the responsibility to some one, but you must see that the Thrisool cross be nicely and correctly placed at the center. Please go ahead . I am trusting you more than your boss. OK”.
I got it fixed properly and handed over to Chief Of Staff (COS) as he was very keen to look at it as his boss wanted to see it after fixing on that evening at the cinema theatre. Soon the COS saw it and commented that it is off centered the Thrisool made of brass fitted, as normally done over a good variety of teak wood for a standard formation sign size of 5 ft x 4ft.So I said Sir! I will prove in a second that the center is exactly the center of the wooden formation sign. I called some one to bring a thread of 5ft length and I streached it straight between the top center and bottom center of the formation sign and asked the COS to look and say that the thread is just passing centrally over the brass Thrisool. The COS jumped with the idea and how I proved what he wanted .He said” How come you are able to get such a bright idea to prove that I am wrong and you are absolutely correct? . I said sir! After all I am your officer. He hugged me tightly.
I always was called to attend the weekly Monday- meeting of General Officer Commander in Chief .Some how I was in his good looks and he was always with me .The first point came up was “ I have come to know that when boulders were rolled down from the mountainous terrain to wards road and the job was done by a Recovery Vehicle bearing our identification.” How it was there beyond our own area. I want to know, from A branch / General Staff branch, allocating vehicles to any one as ordered. None replied and we in EME were not asked. He pointing the respective branches asked but there was no reply. Then He turned towards me (He likes me very much) and said “ I am sorry I did not ask you .I am sorry .You have not spoken as I did not ask you. Can you please highlight. I said “Sir! The vehicle has been attached with 20th Division by our General Staff branch and according to the order from HQ Eastern Command’s, General Staff. The EME battalion was deployed as the President was passing the marked road and there was no problem at all and the Div EME did a good job as no vehicle was damaged , the specific car in which the President is traveling is absolutely safe and I have sent a report on this incident both to the two branches you had questioned Sir!” The GOC IN-C clapped and applauded me and only said “ that is the staff work done by my DADEME , my Offg DDEME. Well done Murty, Come! Let’s have nice coffee. .
