Wher does India Outsource?

Karnik says it's become easier now for Indian companies to expand abroad since local governments and companies aren't as wary as they were when there was jobs being outsourced to India. 'There's a better understanding of the advantages of the global trade. Businesses and governments are a lot more welcoming to Indian IT majors.' Especially now. since there are so many attractive outsourcing destinations, companies will inevitably send their work to the cheapest, most geographically well-positioned country. 'The debate is not about near-shore versus offshore but about effective global sourcing--outsourcing to the right location, with the right skill, where it makes most economic sense,' says B.G. Srinivas, head of Infosys' Europe, Middle East and Africa division. As European customers continue to outsource, Infosys is looking to invest in places where local talent provides the special skills required to respond to European Union regulations, language skills, local market understanding and cultural diversity, Srinivas says. No matter how fluent foreign-language classes can make you, they can't compensate for the cultural understanding native speakers have, Satyam's Aggarwal points out. So Indian companies hire a bulk of their workforce locally wherever they locate facilities, and this works out cheaper as well because it would cost more to send expatriates. Indian companies also find it easier to hire because locals are keen to gain experience working for foreign companies. TCS CEO S. Ramadorai says North America is a favorite destination for his company, because of the proximity it offers to key clients. The region accounts for the majority of revenues of all the large Indian tech majors, including TCS. 'Another favorite is Uruguay, from where we are able to address European and North American requirements and cater to companies that need Spanish capabilities support,' Ramadorai told Forbes.com. A reputation for doing work at low costs helps. 'If an Indian offshore vendor chooses locations, it is an endorsement of the country for cheap, talented manpower,' Aggarwal says. As Indian IT firms continue to expand globally and compete with large foreign players to provide more cost-effective outsourced services, Karnik says there is always some risk of a politically inspired backlash. But for now, governments are aware of the significant advantages of outsourcing and realize it's difficult to be protectionist in today's world of constantly shifting business boundaries.
