Dattatraya, UoH VC booked over student's suicide Hyderabad, Jan 18 (INN): The Cyberabad Police on Monday registered cases against Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatraya, University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao and two others in connection with the suicide by a Dalit student.
Based on a complaint lodged by a student Prashant at the Gachibowli Police Station, cases have been registered against the Union Minister, UoH VC and two ABVP leaders Sushil Kumar and Vishnu. Cases have been registered under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code and also the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Prashant, in his complaint, blamed Dattatraya for the suicide of Rohit Vemula, a second year research scholar of Science, Technology and Society Studies Department, on Sunday night. He claimed that Dattatraya had written a letter to Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani seeking suspension of Dalit students for their alleged "anti-national" and "anti-social" activities. Rohit was among five students who were suspended and expelled from the hostel.
Meanwhile, Dattatraya said neither he nor the BJP were responsible for Rohit's suicide. He said he wrote a letter to Union HRD Ministry seeking action against those who allegedly attacked ABVP leaders. However, he said he was not aware of the action taken by the HRD Ministry. He refused t comment on the case registered against him and three others by the Cyberabad Police
