Apartment wall caves in, residents evacuated Visakhapatnam, Dec 16 (INN): Incessant rains in the district led to the collapse of a retaining wall in a residential apartment building, forcing authorities to evacuate the residents. According to reports coming in, the retaining wall of the cellar caved in, exposing the coloumns of Vaibhav Hills apartment building at Marripalem in the district in wee hours of Thursday. The building comes within the purview of the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority layout. VUDA officials immediately ordered the evacuation of the residents in the 26 apartments and ordered for probe into the incident.
However, no casualties or injuries have been reported from the wall's collapse and the apartment building showed 'no signs of distress,' the city Department of Buildings said in a statement. Preliminary reports indicate that the wall collapsed due to incessant rains caused due to low pressure in Bay of Bengal. However, the officials they would undertake a study on the safety of the building before allowing residents back inside the apartment.
