Six drown as boat capsizes in Adilabad dist. Adilabad, April 24 (INN): Five members of a family and a boatman drowned when a the boat in which they were crossing the Wardha River capsized at Veenevelli village, Kowtala mandal in the district on Sunday.
According to Sub-Inspector Mohammed Sadik Pasha, the victims have been identified as Chandre Nirmala Bhai (36), C Purshotham (34), C Srikanth (14), C Bheem Rao (22), C Bhagwan (21) and boatman Bomine Maiko (50).
The SI revealed that about ten members of a family, were crossing the River in a country boat to reach Maharashtra to attend a marriage function there. The boat developed a leak on the way and this in turn made some of the passengers to jump in the river to save themselves.
However, this action ended up tipping the boat over. Five of the ten passengers managed to reach the shore while the ones who could not swim properly drowned.
Police reached the spot on getting information and retrieved the bodies from the river. The bodies have been sent to hospital for autopsies and a case has been registered.
