LED street lights for 12 more cities, towns

HYDERABAD: For implementation of the pilot project, energy-efficient street-lighting system, at the earliest in five cities, six municipal towns and one nagar panchayat in Telangana state for better illumination with less energy consumption, the commissioner and director of municipal administration has asked the 12 urban local bodies to take the approval of the municipal council concerned before September 20.

The has CDMA directed the municipal commissioners of 12 selected ULBs to discuss the pilot project (replacement of existing conventional street lights with energy-efficient street lights (LEDs) in the selected stretches at Standing Committee/Council meetings and take approval at the earliest and send the approval copy to them.

As per the directions of the chief minister, the CDMA has selected 12 ULBs for retrofitting the existing street lights with energy-efficient LED lighting system in a pilot project in selected stretches in the municipal corporations of Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Ramagundem, Waranagal and Khammam, the municipalities of Siddipet, Siricilla, Mahbubnagar, Manchiryal, Nalgonda and Tandur, and the Gajwel nagar panchayat.

EESL is a joint venture of PSUs of the ministry of power with main the objective of implementing energy-efficient projects on turnkey basis in association with ULBs and state government.

The CDMA held a meeting last week with EESL, mayors, municipal chairpersons and commissioners and engineers of the 12 ULBs. The civic bodies agreed to extend cooperation to make the project a success.

For implementing the project at the earliest, CDMA has asked ULBs to hand over selected stretches to the EESL for the entire agreement period and ensure 100 percent working of electrical meters to measure accurate energy consumption and replacement of damaged cables and junction boxes, if any, with immediate effect.

Ensure 100 percent glowing of lights in selected stretches, so as to arrive at accurate energy consumption in that area before replacement with LEDs.

To extend cooperation with EESL in planning, operation and maintenance during the project period. ULBs should maintain separate record for the selected stretch, ie, number of lights, fixtures, load factor, meters, metering readings, bills of last one year prior to project to till the end of the agreement period etc.

Under the pilot project, it has proposed to replace the existing high-energy consuming street lights, ie, halogen lamps, HPSV and HPMV light fittings with energy-efficient street lights (LEDs) in a phased manner.

The ULBs will select a minimum number of street lights that need to be replaced with the LED lights based on population: 150 lights for 1 lakh population, 200 lights for 1 to 3 lakh population and 300 lights for more than 3 lakh.
