AP Formation Day to change from Nov 1 to June 8 HYDERABAD: In all likelihood, coming November 1 may pass off without the official ceremonies celebrated in every nook and cranny of Andhra Pradesh along with the patriotic 'Maa Telugu Thalliki' song.
The reason is that Nov 1, the day which had much significance in the history of erstwhile united AP till the bifurcation of the State, might lose its prominence in the reorganised State as AP government is contemplating against holding the celebrations of AP Formation Day on Nov 1.
As erstwhile AP was formed on Nov 1 in 1956, previous governments used to hold the formation day celebrations with pomp and pageantry. But this time, since Telangana State was carved out of united AP and AP was reorganised on June 2, the AP government is mulling not to hold any celebrations on Nov 1.
AP was under President's rule till June 8. The government is understood to be of the view that since an elected government headed by Chandrababu Naidu came into existence on June 8 after the division, that day should be celebrated as the formation day of the reorganised AP.
According to sources, the Chief Minister is against holding AP Formation Day celebrations on Nov 1. 'Naidu is of the view that there is no point in continuing with the celebrations as Nov 1 marked the merger of then Telangana of erstwhile Hyderabad State with Andhra State, which has become a separate State now,' said sources.
Sources added that the Chief Minister is eliciting views of his ministerial colleagues. He is likely to give clarity on the issue in a couple of days.
TDP leaders want the government to treat June 8 as the formation day. Some others argue that AP should observe October 1 as the formation day as it was on this day the erstwhile Andhra State was formed after separation from then Madras Presidency in 1953.
As far as Telangana is concerned, there is no confusion over its formation day as the State came into existence on June 2.
