T-Congress demands open voting Hyderabad, May 21 (INN): Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N Uttam Kumar Reddy has demanded open voting for the elections of six MLCs. He said voting through secret ballot would not be acceptable.
Speaking to media persons in Assembly premises here on Thursday, Uttam strongly criticised the TRS for fielding the fifth candidate. As per the strength in the Assembly, he said that the TRS should have fielded only four candidates to ensure unanimous election. However, by fielding the fifth candidate, the TRS has flouted all traditions of MLC elections. He said that the TPCC would approach the court, if required, to press for its demand for open voting.
The TPCC chief said that the Congress party has fielded former MLA Akula Lalitha as its candidate, especially in view of lack of representation of women in the Telangana Legislative Council. He expressed confidence that she would comfortably win the MLC seat.
Earlier, Lalitha filed her nomination papers in the presence of Uttam Kumar Reddy, Leaders of Opposition K Jana Reddy (Assembly) and Mohammed Ali Shabbir (Council), TPCC Working President Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, MLAs Dr J Geetha Reddy, T Jeevan Reddy and others.
Speaking to media persons later, Lalitha thanked AICC President Sonia Gandhi for her candidature and assured that she would represent the issues concerning women and BCs in the Council. She alleged that the TRS Government has been trying to suppress the women and no representation has been given to them in the cabinet of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao
