OGH performs pancreas, kidney transplantation Hyderabad, Sept 15 (INN): For the first time in the history of government hospitals in the country, Osmania General Hospital has performed pancreas and kidney transplant on a patient.
The transplantation was performed on Wednesday on patient Ganesh, 26 years, of Atmakur mandal in Nalgonda district. He was suffering from Type 1 Diabetes since 20 years and was on dialysis since two years for renal failure. The organs were retrieved from a brain dead patient Vijay Kumar, who met with road accident, through Jeevandhan, The surgery was performed for about 12 hours and would cost around Rs. 30-40 lakhs in private sectors which was done successfully free of cost at the OGH.
The surgery was performed by a team of doctors comprising of Surgical Gastroenterologist Dr. Madhusudhan, Urologist Dr. Ramakrishna Prasad, Nephrologist Dr. Manisha and Anesthetist Dr. Deepraj Singh. With the support of the administration the Superintendent Dr.G.V.S.Murthy and also with cooperation from colleague doctors, nursing, paramedical and other staff of OGH the surgery was performed successfully.
Patient's blood sugars and kidney function have come to near normal. He is in ICU on ventilator support and improving steadily.
