The state government’s directive to all schools to sing Maa Telugu Talliki Mallepudanda during the morning assembly has been described by supporters of the Telangana movement as a conspiracy and a pre-planned strategy by the government to scuttle the Telangana movement.
Students’ unions owing allegiance to the Telangana Rastra Samiti (TRS) and other Telangana outfits have vowed to protest the recital of the song in schools located in the Telangana region.
“The state government’s latest move is a conspiracy to undermine the identity of Telangana. We don’t accept Telugu Talli as it was created to inspire the concept of a united Andhra and appeal to the Telugu sentiments at the cost of Telangana. The rulers are trying to sow the seeds of ‘united Andhra sentiment’ in the minds of students at a tender age which will enable them to scuttle the Telangana movement in the long run,” alleged Mr S. Venkatesh Goud, the president of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti Vidyarthi, the student’s wing of the TRS.
Several students’ unions in the Osmania University (OU) that support separate statehood for Telangana conducted meetings on Friday to protest the government’s decision. They decided to visit schools in the region and urge the school managements to instead include the song Jaya Jaya he Telangana in the school prayer.
“This song glorifies the rich heritage and culture of the Telangana region. It mentions the majestic Charminar and the traditional Bonalu and Batukamma played by women in the region and will teach students about Telangana,” said Mr Ravi Kiran of the Telangana Jagruthi Sena.
Proponents of the Telangana movement say that the state government used an excuse to introduce the Telugu Talli song.
