Self-inquiry.

At present we are conscious of ourselves as a set of adjuncts like body, mind, intellect with object knowing consciousness,in which our attention seemingly move away from the self towards the object with seeming separation from the knowing subject and known object.
All objects come into existence only when our attention is directed towards them. The act of directing our attention
towards something which appears as other than ourselves
is what we call thinking. In self-enquiry we withdraw our
attention from thoughts and objects consciousness moves
selfwards because self is the base for appearence and
disappearence of "I" thought i.e mind. This natural positing of our attention in the self conscious being is self-enquiry.
Self-Enquiry is holding on to awareness of being that
"we already are".When the mind strays you bring it back-
thats all.Self-Enquiry is not through thought but paying
attention to the source of it.There is no ego apart from
the idea of "I" thought. The "I" thought arises from the self and depends upon the self for it's existence. It is never apart from the self and infact the self but forgetful of it's
true nature. It believes in the lie of it's independent existence apart from the self.As enquiry proceeds the lie becomes tenuous until it loses it's power to hold us.Each time when you observe this "I" thought you break your
identification with the "I",you disconnect from this "I" as being part of you.As you peel from this false "I" ,you will find yourself spontaneously abiding in a tranquil centre, just abide in that "I am".At this point there is no feeling of "I" thought as an object presently sensed.Just
be there. After sometime mind will take over, that is natural,
do not be frustrated. With practice we will find much easier
to abide in this state of "I am" and for longer periods.
There is no place for effort, expectation, hurry in this.
The idea that one is an individual person is generated and
sustained by "I" thought and it's habit of constantly attaching itself to all thoughts and perceptions that go on in the mind and the body.Self-Enquiry is to reverse this process by depriving the "I" thought of all the thoughts and perceptions that it normally identifies with.If one can break the connection between "I" thought and the thoughts it identifies with, then the "I' thought itself will
subside and finally disappear. This can be done by holding on to "I" thought, excluding all other thoughts. If one can keep the attention on the inner feeling of "I",the power of self pulls the "I" thought back into it and eventually destroys it so completely that it never rises again. This is the moment of self realisation. When this happens the concept of individual self is destroyed, only self remains.
All this happens when we perform self-enquiry with the same intensity as that of a drowning man struggles for air.

Energy dynamics in Self-Enquiry:

Dear all,
The mind has a tendency to move,it is in continuous movement,so

there is momentum.Suddenly mind has impulse to do something and in

"who am i" Self-Enquiry, the movement of impulse is stopped suddenly

due to awareness and now a gap come into existence between the centre of

awareness and the body-mind complex and you feel your body-mind

complex as something distant, you become separate from it.Whenever

you are in activity, you are deeply absorbed in it.Sudden stoppage of

mental activity in "who am i"enquiry throws you out of mental activity.

This being thrown leads us to the awareness of our being.Ordinarily we

move from one activity to another continuously without gap in between.

This habit is broken in "who am i" enquiry and a gap come into existence.

When there is a feeling an impulse to do something, stop without the

thought coming into picture.Miracles happen because in activity when you

stop,a gap happens. You will be totally taken away from the body-mind and

realm of activity.Energy is always in a movement, either going out or coming

in.Energy can never be static.Impulse of thought means energy is

moving out.All activities are movements towards that which is without, from

that which is within i.e movements from within to without. That movement

happens according to the direction given by the innate tendencies. When

the movement is stopped suddenly in "who am i" Self-Enquiry,the energy

cannot do anything other than moving inward.Even though thought stops,

the mechanism which can lead you towards the centre of awareness is there.

You are converting your energy and changing it's dimension every moment

in "who am i" Self-Enquiry in which the energy of awareness falls back into

awareness again.
If one is angry or violent, energy has been aroused and it

has come to a point where it wants to be expressed and that energy needs

movement. If at that time, you start loving somebody, the same energy will

move into love.So the energy of love and hate are one,the energy of

passion and compassion are one.The energy of anger, violence, peace are

one and the same.Only with real impulse does energy move.Anger is pure

energy. It can become bad if it goes out and destroy something or it may

become bliss if it moves within and throws you to the centre of awareness

of your being. It is like atomic energy in the atom, pure, innocent, neutral.

It can be used for destructive purposes like throwing bombs on Hiroshima

and Nagasaki killing millions of innocent people or it can used to produce

enormous electric power. It all depends on us.If one feels that anger is

bad,so i should stop, the energy moves into that mental consideration,

in which case also the energy moves from the inner to the outer.

So mental suppression does not change the dimension of energy.

If you start thinking about the centre of awareness, then also the energy

will move from the inner into thinking which is outer to the Self.

You can waste this inner energy very simply.Just a thought will be enough

to give it a direction thus limiting it.If thought process really stops during

Self-Enquiry,the centre of awareness of being explodes which is called

implosion.Mystics always live in that uninterrupted implosive state of being.

Arunachaleswara temple--Tiruvannamalai,Tamilnadu.
There are five main Pancha Bhootha Lingams in South India (Tamilnadu & Andhra Pradesh) and recently I completed my tour of the last one. This I will be posting one by one. In my thirst for the spiritual quest I found the visits to the temples extremely an enchanting experience. Each temple has its own charm, a legend to tell and all this I want to share with one and all.

These Pancha Bhoothas lingams - Agni, Vayu, Bhoomi, Akash and Jal are situated in Tiruvannamalai, Kalahasthi (Andhra, all others are in Tamilnadu), Kanchipuram, Chidambaram, Tiruvanaikal near Trichi. The last visit was to Tiruvannamalai and I thought I would start with the same.

Tiruvannamalai
This temple is 1000years old and situated at the foot hills of Tiruvannamalai. The Siva here who is the in the form of Agni, is called Annamalayar or Arunachaleswar. This temple has a sprawling area of 24 acres and surrounded by huge towers. The one at east side is the tallest called the Rajagopuram has 11 tiers and is 217 feet tall.
It is the second tallest in Tamilnadu the first being the Meenakshi Kovil at Madurai. We can see the temple with the back drop of the hill . It is really magnificent.
As we enter the first prakaram we come across the Subramanian temple on the left and this is the place where he appeared before the saint Aarunagirinathar. On to the right is the One thousand pillared mandapam. Behind the Subramanya temple there is a mandapam and when we went the function (valaikappu) was being conducted to the Amman (goddess). It is the seemantham for the goddess, done in the belief that she is expecting Lord Ganesha in her womb as Ganesh chathurthi falls in August.

Opposite to this Mandapam is the Vinayagar temple and Ganesha's idol having a valmpuri trunk was kept outside with silver kavacham.

Opposite of the Vinayagar Kovil in the centre is a huge Nandi the vehicle of Lord Siva and on the right side we could see the Pathala lingam. For this we had to get down few steps as the Lingam is situated in the basement. This is adjacent to the thousand pillar mandapam.

Then we cross the next tower and here also we can find a Nandi in the centre and Vinayagar which is made of pink stone. We also saw the Kalabhairava temple opposite to Ganesha temple facing the west. After this comes the third tower also called as the kili gopuram where we can see a parrot sculpted on the tower.

Inside as we move one can see the Unnamalaiyamman sannidhi but we headed straight inside and went to get the special ticket to get the darshan of Annamalair. After finishing the darshan we moved towards the Amman sannidhi and we could see many pilgrims lighting lamps for the Navgrahas, situated on left side of the Amman sannidhi.

We circumambulated the temple where we could see the deities of Lord Dakshinamurthy, God's palliyarai, (sleeping chamber) and Chandikeshwarar sannidhi. We went around the whole of 4th prakaram where we could see the idol of Ganesha under a tree, then the Kalahasthiar temple, which are sub shrines spread around the main temple. There are two temple tanks in the first and second prakaram.

Then we went for Girivalam (circumambulation of the Arunachala hill or Tiruvannamalai. At the start of the hill there is 1500 year old temple dedicated to Adi Arunachaleshwar and his consort Abhidha kuchambigai. The Girivalam is about 14 kms. and it is expected one completes the girivalam on full moon night then visit the main temple to get the full benefits of the Lord’s blessings. How ever we did it the other way around to save time. The Arunachala hill itself is considered to be the Lord himself and this hill gives different views from different angles. On one side it appears as the reclining Lord with a face and his flowing Jada, on another side it appears as twin hills; the ardha narishwara . It is believed that Siva and Parvathi exists here as adrdha narishwara. The Karthigai deepam festival is very f

In this Kartik
month awareness is overflowing.Just we have to allow it with a passive mind.
Many know the state of agitated mind only,so they do not know anything about
passive mind.Miracles happen with the passive mind.In deep sleep the mind is
passive and we are happy. The same happiness continues in the waking state
if we are in receptive passive state of mind.Divinity in the form of pure consciousness fills that passive empty cup of mind.Thought cannot comprehend this pure
consciousness. When there is ending of thought there is pure consciousness in
that empty mind.So all methods based on thought are futile to gain pure consciousness. All religions are belief systems and belief is thought.Belief never
takes us to the truth. On the contrary if we get rid of all beliefs and dogmas
suddenly we find ourselves in pure consciousness.Religiosity means dissolving
ourselves in the pure consciousness which is without any boundaries and so
limitless.Belonging to a certain religion or a branch of religion, sect is not
religiosity.Belonging to a particular thing happens when the mind is in ignorance
and blind. We cannot see light of the truth with a blind mind.To see the truth
mind must be without any conditioning.Conditioning makes us blind ans so we
cannot see the truth with a conditioned mind.Religion is a conditioning process
which makes the mind dull and stupid. So we must be free of religions if we
want to taste religiosity. To be one with the pure consciousness is real religiosity
and the nature of that pure consciousness is bliss.A blissful man always do
a right action because he has no self interest, motive, intention in his action.
If there is right action there is no hindrance to our innate happiness.
To live like that is real religiosity.Existence fulfills itself through us in this way.
This is the purpose of our earthly existence but not for pursuing petty things of
phenomenal reality which results in a life of constant conflict and strife.
This is the way of Buddha who says mind in ignorance(Tamasoma) is led
towards the light of consciousness(Jyotirgamaya),leaving the identity with
mortal body-mind complex (Mrutyorma) and establishing ourselves as
immortal pure consciousness(Amrutangamaya).
