two categories.
Those who have the capacity to hold on to the conscious aspect reach the Self through the ray of consciousness
which resides in each one of us.Vedanta says that it is
Jnana marga. Here Jnana means knowledge of Self.
This requires subtle intellect with sattwa guna in predominance.Majority they don't have these qualities.
For them who are basically having gross intellect with strong
identity with body-mind complex, the dynamic part of
consciousness(Sakti) helps in their spiritual discipline if they
surrender to the dynamic part.At gross level breath represents the dynamic part of the consciousness.
So breath control methods are enormously important in
this category of spiritual disciplines. These methods help the
unity of dynamic aspect with the conscious aspect of Self.
Self-inquiry belongs to Jnana marga and requires subtle
intellect. In this we hold on to conscious aspect of the Self.
Yoga means merging of dynamic aspect in the conscious aspect.Yoga starts with duality and ends in non duality.
Self-inquiry never entertain the concept of duality at any stage.
