Pregnant woman immolates self, daughters Chittoor, May 1 (INN): Unable to bear sustained harassment at the hands of her husband and mother-in-law, a pregnant woman set her two daughters and herself on fire at Tiruchanoor in Tirupati late on Saturday. The tragedy left Padmavathi (28), and her two daughters Ramya (3) and Sumala (1) dead, while her niece Yamini was hospitalized.
Inspector Bhaskar told INN that Padmavathi was being harassed by her husband Vijay Kumar and his mother to force her to bring additional dowry. To add to Padmavathi's suffering, a recent ultrasound scan had revealed that the five-month-old foetus in her womb was that of a girl.
Incidentally, an ultrasound scan to determine the gender of a child is illegal in the country. After the result of the ultrasound scan was known, Vijay Kumar's harassment increased, leaving his wife frustrated.
Late on Saturday night, Padmavathi set her sleeping daughters and niece Yamini (5) and herself ablaze after pouring kerosene. The neighbours noticed the fire and broke into the house. They were rushed to the Ruia Hospital with the help of 108 ambulances.
Padmavathi and Suma were declared brought dead, while Ramya succumbed while undergoing treatment. Yamini is presently said to be in a stable condition. Police registered a case and further investigations are on.
