Thank you for the article. I believe all women should be made aware of these facts. They also need to know some other facts that have come to light, so that they do not take it for granted they will never develop the disease:- I have picked out a few of them from various sources. - 'Breast cancer now strikes more women in the world than any other type of cancer. This year, an estimated 1,050,346 women worldwide will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 372,969 women will die from the disease. - Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, excluding cancers of the skin. Breast cancer accounts for one of every three cancer diagnosis in women. - Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in industrialized countries and second to cervical cancer in developing countries. 1.Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women aged 35-44. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Australia aged over 35 years - 29% of all cancers diagnosed. Younger women who get breast cancer have a lower survival rate than older women who get breast cancer. 2.Women who immigrate to the U.S. from Asia experience an 80 percent increase in their breast cancer risk in one generation. One generation later, the rate for their daughters approaches that of women born in the U.S. Studies show women can take on the breast cancer risk of the country they move to within as little as one generation. 3. Only about 5% of breast cancer is inherited. And about 80% of women diagnosed with the disease will be the first in their families to get breast cancer. All women are at risk for breast cancer, regardless of hereditary factors. In fact, 85 to 90 percent of breast cancer incidences cannot be explained by hereditary factors. Other known risk factors include: earlier onset of menstruation (12 years or younger), later menopause (55 years or older), late first-term pregnancy (30 years or older), no children or no breast-feeding, early use of oral contraceptives, more than four years use of hormone replacement therapy, postmenopausal obesity, alcohol consumption, exposures to second-hand cigarette smoke, low physical activity and exposure to radiation. 4. The possibility of breast cancer increases with age, but approximately 70% occurs in women with no identifiable risk factors. 5.Cumulative exposure to estrogen and xenoestrogens underlies most of the known risk factors for breast cancer, with the exception of ionizing radiation. 6.Mammography screening does not prevent or cure breast cancer; however, it may detect the disease before symptoms occur. Breast cancer tumors can exist for six to ten years before they grow large enough to be detected by mammography. In addition, mammography is less effective in younger women than in older women.'
