Is it possible to Destroy literature and Culture as a whole? Are there any examples from the Histroy where in a specific literature or culture was totally destroyed without a trace? Or is it yet another lie by the racist bigots to whirl up caste-based hatred? Posted by: Malakpet Rowdy At: 19, Sep 2007 10:39:13 PM IST ..... Yes. There is evidences! Can anybody decipher INdus Script? How many of us know Brahmi Script? How many of us know Prakrit Language? In fact, all these are once Indian languages, know became scholarly activity at Universities. From 1929 to till date, efforts are on to decipher INdus Script and the result is uncertain. Only we have coins and their towns, not Indus people and their culture. Pub language, 'F'-language, Cut-Short language - will definitely change the shape of the language, if not it's grammer. Once the language lost it's grammer, it will be destroyed forever. From the beginning, Sanskrit was the language of Upper Varnas or CAstes in INdia and Prakrit was the language of the masses. Emperor Asoka, for the first time issued edits in Prakrit so that the message from the emperor could reach the masses. Sanrkti has royal patronage but not Prakrit. Few people wrote something in Prakrit. When rulers change thir languge too imposed or introduced. Telugu belongs to Dravidian group of language and has it's own grammer and so is the case with Kannada. But both originated from Tamil. But Tamil has some links with Brahui ( presently in Afghanistan). Hence, Migrations too can either change the language or destroy the language. Now we speak Telugu + English --) Tenglish! We even dropped some Telugu Words from the alphabets of telugu.

Prof. GV Subrahmanyam (Yes the same Prof) writes - ___________________________________________________ There is a group of scholars who believe that there were writings in Telugu before Nannaya composed his work. They hold that this must have been Jaina literature, like the Kannada writing of the same period and could have been destroyed by the opponents of Jain tradition. 'This theory today does not have strong supportive evidence'. There is strong evidence to suggest that there was a vibrant tradition of folk literature in Telugu including a wide variety of songs, ballads, narratives and theatrical performance during the pre-nannaya period. Literary historians tend to describe the pre-Nannaya period as one of the 'Oral Literature'. Some scholars view Nannaya's work as the emergence of a literate tradition in Telugu and a break from the purely 'oral tradition' of the earlier period. A deeper research into the continuities between the purely oral phase and the literate phase of Telugu is yet to be taken up. But the continued existence of the oral tradition in its own right, parallell to and in constant interaction with the literate tradition can be clearly seen throughout. ___________________________________________________ This text taken from: Medieval Indian Literature - An Anthology by K. AyyappaPanicker published by Sahitya Academy -------) The above text gives one answer to the questions about missing literature!

Newayz, going by Dr. Reddy's analysis, our langauge is definitely as old as, if not older than Tamil. Can't these discoveries be used by the Govt of AP to put enough pressure on Ambika Soni for the recognition of Telugu as a Classical Language?

Correct me if I am wrong but Nowhere in the Histroy, literature pertaining to a language was destroyed 100%, even though there were attacks on various cultures and literatures. Even if a few documents were destroyed literature cant be erased from the minds of the people and it will survive fron any kind of onslaught. There are many undocumented literary works that are thousands of years old, still surviving till date. However I am willing to chnage my stance if you can show any kind of evidence or proof - The question is CAN YOU?

Dr.Reddy garu, You are really great - though you are a Doctor by profession, you took time and effort to dig out the history. Writer of this article Udayavarlu garu, thanks a lot to you for bringing out this article and publishing it on TP.
