The sweltering heat is taking its toll and it is almost impossible to step out of the house. What better way to spend your leisure time than to remain in the cool confines of the home and curl up with a crossword.
This time let us look at a mixed bag, where we generally take up clues and decipher them. These clues are relatively simple ie if you see hard enough you will arrive at the solution.
A spray proves air is scattered(9)
In this clue, the word scattered is significant. Scattered usually indicates rearranging of certain words to arrive at the solution. The word proves air is most probably the anagram. This is simply because they total up to 9 words which is the size of our word. If we connect A spray and rearrange proves air we get vaporiser which is the solution.
Pay lout to be off to thrash(7)
In this clue, the word is either thrash or pay. But if we closely look at pay lout they add up to 7 words, what we are looking for. If we rearrange pay lout we get the word outplay which means to thrash. This is something anyone who regularly glances at the sports pages would know.
A trail winding including a US island(9)
This, though appears tough, is actually quite simple. The word we need to look for is island. Usually such words indicates the name of some island. A trail winding means A trail is an anagram. Including a US means a US is also part of the anagram. If we combine A trail and a US, we get Australia which is an island.
Its reckless to read about evil spirit(9)
This is also an angrammatical clue. The word spirit can be misleading initially but with enough practice one can judge that out. read about evil means read and evil are anagrams. This is a perfect example of a partial anagram where only part of the word is anagrammatical. If we combine reckless and read evil we get the word Daredevil which is the answer.
Hot water provider provider in cagey service(6)
This is a straightforward hidden clue. We had an entire chapter dedicated to this one. By now you should be able to pick that one up. If we observe cagey service and link it with hot water, observe that in the words cagey service we have the word geyser hidden. This is the solution.
