Articles: News | Microsoft says no to unions - Mr. Ravi Kumar Sunkara
| |
Kolkata: Microsoft India chairman Ravi Venkatesan has made it clear that unions are not welcome in India's burgeoning IT industry, hinting they could affect the momentum of growth.
'It is not clear how the formation of unions will help IT. As long as there is a healthy dialogue between the management and the employees, no third party is required,' said Venkatesan.
He was reacting to the debate sparked by discussions in the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo on strikes and formation of unions in IT firms. Venkatesan was speaking at an event here late Thursday.
Without mincing words, Venkatesan said: 'The IT sector is very proactive in bringing a disproportionate share of global wealth to India. The momentum should continue and unions are not needed in this sector at all.'
At Thursday's event, Microsoft India launched two programmes - Gyandeep and Gyanbridhi - in collaboration with the state government and Intel to 'accelerate IT percolation in West Bengal'.
State IT Minister Manab Mukherjee, who attended the event, refused to react to Venkatesan's comments. But Industry Minister Nirupam Sen said: 'Every worker does have the right to unionise.'
After meeting Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee while launching the programmes Thursday, Venkatesan said: 'The perspective of the state government and the transformation here is inspiring.
'Infrastructure is improving in West Bengal. The leadership is visionary here.'
Gyandeep will help government employees to buy personal computers through an affordable finance scheme, while Gyanbridhi will offer students computers at an 'extremely competitive cost' and include the curriculum of the school board and tutorials.
'Our job is simple, we need to get people see the importance of computers. Affordability is a major issue that needs to be sorted out,' said Venkatesan.
