More than 30,000 people were evacuated to safe places as heavy rains continue to lash coastal Andhra region for the second consecutive day Friday.
The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal crossed south Andhra coast between Ongole and Bapatla in the afternoon, unleashing torrential rains and heavy winds in the costal districts of Prakasam, Nellore and Guntur.
Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasad Rao said here that the administrations in the coastal districts were on alert but there was no cause of concern.
As the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre forecast heavy rains in the coastal region for next 48 hours, the authorities are on alert to evacuate people from low-lying areas.
Normal life in the nine coastal districts came to a grinding halt due to the rains. In Nellore and Prakasam, electricity supply was disrupted. Traffic was hit hard in some places.
As a precaution, the authorities declared a holiday for educational institutions in the region. Warning signals have been hoisted at the Visakhapatnam and Kakinada ports and fishermen were cautioned against venturing into the sea.
In Prakasam district, 11,000 people from low-lying areas were shifted to 26 relief camps. Dozens of villages along Buckingham Canal were inundated. About five tanks have also breached in the district.
In Nellore, strong winds uprooted electricity poles and trees disrupting road traffic.
'We have already evacuated 4,000 people from fishermen habitations along the coast,' said district collector Uday Lakshmi.
This is the third time in less than a month that coastal Andhra is experiencing heavy rains.
More than 100 people were killed and crops, houses and other property worth Rs.26 billion were damaged in floods and heavy rains late last month and again about 10 days ago.
The state has a 1,000 km long coastline and the region is prone to cyclones during monsoon.
