Hyderabad: At least hundred people are feared dead as ten
coaches of the Repalle-Secunderabad fast passenger train submerged in
reservoir water after derailment in the Nadikudi-Bibinagar section of the
South Central Railway in the early hours today.
According to reports reaching the South Central Railway, the train derailed between at 0500 hrs between Ramannapet and Veligonda stations and ten compartments were submerged in the water that gushed out from a breached reservoir.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has spoken to the Railway Minister and left for the spot by road.
Though railway authorities were unable to give a clear picture about the casualties, they admit this could be a major mishap.
South Central Railway(SCR) authorities had rushed medical relief vans and doctors from both Secunderabad and Vijayawada.
Railway authorities said buses were arranged at Nalgonda and Miryalaguda to take the stranded passengers to safer places.
However, buses are yet to reach the accident spot, due to heavy floods.
A special train has already left the spot with stranded passengers to Secunderabad. Railway doctors who reached the spot are treating the injured.
South Central Railway has established a control room at Secunderabad and help lines at Secunderabad, Guntur, Vijayawada, Repalle and Nalgonda.
Expert swimmers have been pressed in service to search for bodies. Locals have rescued some passengers who climbed trees to save themselves.
Hundreds of worried relatives of the passengers have gathered at the Secunderabad railway station but the railway authorities are unable to give any information due to disruption in communication.
