Articles: News | Strong case for US consulate in Hyderabad - Mr. Ravi Kumar Sunkara

Hyderabad: Hyderabad was the preferred destination over Bangalore for a US consulate in southern India, US Consul General in Chennai David T. Hopper said here Friday.
However, a final decision was yet to be taken, said Hopper, who had called on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Thursday.
'It is less convenient for visa aspirants from Hyderabad to travel to Chennai than from Bangalore and hence this city has a strong case,' he told journalists on the sidelines of a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) conference on HIV/AIDS.
The US Congress in June this year passed a bill that allows for opening one more consulate in India. The US already has consulates in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.
While stating that south India was a priority for US for its impressive economic development, Hopper said a decision had been taken to establish another consulate in view of the growing number of visas being issued as well as the number of Americans visiting the region.
He hoped that an announcement would be made in Washington early next year.
On his maiden visit to Hyderabad after taking over as consul general in June, Hopper said he was impressed with the rapid strides made by Andhra Pradesh, especially Hyderabad, in IT and other sectors.
He said the chief minister had assured him of all assistance if the US decided to establish a consulate in Hyderabad.
