Articles: My Experience | Blood Donation - Ms. Sowmya V.B.
| |
16th October 2005. The day began as usual for me. The same old bed, same old house, same old routine with a cup of coffee and a news paper. At that time, i never expected something will happen today which will change the way i look at Life and death. As i was browsing through the news paper, i saw a small news item in the local news section. I never browse through the local news.
I just listen to what people around me talk to gather information on local happenings. But, on that day, luckily, i read the local news too. It was a news item from NIMS blood bank about a shortage of blood for a certain group in their bank. The news item requested for the donors to voluntarily donate blood. Well, that happened to be my own blood group and i thought i will go there.
However, i was not sure about myself. Being very fickle and added to it, lazy , i wasn't sure if i will finally go there and do the job. But, i knew i cant forgive myself if i stay quiet doing nothing, when there is something which i can do without much effort and which might possibly help some person if not saving a life. Till that afternoon, i was wondering - if i get up from lethargy and start making a move. the clock stuck 12. Some force suddenly pushed me from this drowsy, lazy holiday feeling.
I got ready, ate and headed towards NIMS. Even in the bus, i was wondering .... will they take my blood? will i be alright after that? I remembered the day when i donated blood in college in a red cross camp last year. I was afraid but didnt feel any sort of inconvenience at that time. That memory gave me some confidence that i'll not feel giddy or energy-less after the ritual.
As i am lost in my thoughts, I didnt notice the way we are going. The conductor's shout-' NIMS' suddenly woke me up from my dreams and i got down from the bus. I crossed the road. As i saw the main GATE, with people coming and going, again, i was bitten by fear bug. However, mustering some courage, i approached the watchman there and asked him where the blood bank is. He demonstrated on how to reach the place. as i was walking, i saw all sorts of people there. most of them were tense, some of them sad. I think i heard a few cries too. Ofcourse, this is my first visit to a hospital's inner core.
Walking for a while, i entered a building where the blood bank is said to exist. as i climbed the steps, i was becoming nausetic. May be the hospital atmosphere and especially the smell doesnt fit my nose much. after one or two turns on the stairs, i atlast saw the board - 'blood bank'.
