Articles: Development | Senior Citizens’ Villages - Mr. VNS Raju Inapakutiki
| |
The very title separates them from the mainstream of life with which they always wish to associate with till their end. This very concept is detrimental to the mental and thereby the physical health of the Senior Citizens. We all become Senior Citizens one day. Is this the way – as do we do now - we wish to be treated as Senior Citizens?
It is foolish to talk about these villages when a pensioner (who is a retired teacher) is generally subjected to a very inhuman treatment by all the agencies involved in granting him/her pension. He/she needs to run between the offices to get the pension benefits. Once the pension is sanction one needs to run for opening a bank account and again every year one needs to prove before the government babus - to whom the retired teacher had imparted moral education! – of his/her live condition. The pension granting and thereafter systems are colonial. First we need to change them make them more Senior Citizen friendly to prove our sincerity.
What is needed is the demonstration of actual care by the society like ours that has got more number of young and middle aged people than the Senior Citizens. The following actions would add substantial value to the lives of the Senior Citizens of this country.
We shall encourage sons and daughters who live with their aged parents. We shall recognize those sons and daughters who live even along with their grand parents.
We shall give priority for Senior Citizens in all public places that are owned by both govt and private managements.
