Self trained soldier, born commander, dynamic leader, popularly known as ‘Netaji’ . Nation salutes Netaji on the eve of his 111th birth anniversary.
Subhash Chandra Bose born in an affluent and orthodox Bengali family in Cuttack, Orissa to Janaki Nath Bose and Prabhavati Devi. Then his father was a public prosecutor, later he was elected as a member of legislative counsel.
After completing primary education in Ravenshaw collegiate school, Cuttack, he moved to Scottish church college Calcutta for graduation. During this period a group of students led by Bose assaulted on English professor for his racist comments. This led to his suspension from the college. His leadership and revolutionary qualities are evident from this incident. Later moved to the Cambridge University . He topped the prestigious Indian civil services examination, which proved his academic excellence.
Deeply disturbed by the Jallianwala Bhag tragedy, he desperately wanted to enter the freedom struggle . However his parents compelled him to take the civil services exam in view to divert his attention from the freedom struggle.
However on his return to India in 1921, he joined Indian national congress youth wing , leaving his lucrative career in civil services. Later he was suggested by Gandhiji to work for Bengal unit of INC, under the guidance of ‘desabandhu’ Chitharanjan Das, whom he treated as political guru.
In April 1924, he was appointed as chief executive officer for the newly constituted Calcutta Corporation, to which he was elected as mayor in September 1930. During his 20 years of freedom struggle, he was arrested 11 times on various grounds.
Because of the ideological differences with Gandhiji he resigned his presidency of the INC to which he was elected twice. He strongly believed India will achieve political freedom only with the political , diplomatic and military from the various countries of the world. He insisted on international policy against European colonialism.
He predicted the need of globalization during 1940`s itself. His vision depicts that he was the leader of fore generations. He was greatly impressed by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda , Rabindranath Tagore. The speeches and ideology of garibaldi, Mazzini also influenced him to a great extent .
Later in 1939,he founded ‘Forward block’ with socialist ideology . He married his secretary ,Austrian born, , Emilie Schenkl and had a daughter whom he named Anita.
Once he was exiled by the British rulers, then he went across the European countries , where he met many intellects and political leaders. He was house arrested in 1941 , however he escaped to Peshawar ,later he moved to Germany where he sleeked the help of Hitler . He founded Indian national army and to strengthen it he extensively travelled through oceans, forests , deserts and rubber yards .
He restructured INA in Japan by inducting Indian freedom fighters, war prisoners ,workers in Singapore ,Malaya and raised the strength to 40,000 whom he trained and inspired to fight for Indian freedom . It was he who immortalized the jai hind slogan.
From Japan, he reached eastern India with his army and hoisted flag of INA in Manipur and Andaman and Nicobar islands. He also established provisional government with his supporters in Singapore .
He was supposed to be dead in a plane crash ,on his way to Japan. It was disgusting that the death of great leader is controversial and it is the job of government to probe in to the matter and make the facts known to the world.
After India`s independence he was not properly rewarded by the government ,both in terms of awards and regards. It was only in 1978, that his portrait was set up in the parliament hall, by the Moraji Desai government.
‘ Bharata Ratna’ will not add any special honor to this legendry personality. As nation had already honored this unique leader as ‘Netaji’.
Government should at least give the chakra awards on his name, so that at least once in a year we shall remember this great son of India . It is also a spirit of inspiration for the awardees to receive these awards.
