“I enjoyed thoroughly. The food was awesome. Music was great. Everybody was friendly. It was fun,” said Mathew Lapierre, one of the few non-Indians who were invited to the event.
Apeksha Choudhary, an accounting major student, had a simple reason for her involvement: “Diwali is a perfect representation of Indian culture.”
Hardeep Singh Saini, a freshman, had more nostalgic reason. He said he felt homesick when his family was celebrating Diwali and an event like this helped him relieve the far-from-home pangs.
The event attracted some curious alumni too. Gladwyn Desouza, who graduated in May 2005 and now works at Lehman Brothers as a financial analyst, said he was there to see “what has changed at Baruch” since he left only a few months back.
Did he find anything different? “We had no Diwali celebrations before,” he quipped.
In her thanksgiving note, president Ramanan noted the hard work of all volunteers especially Rohit Gupta, Abhay Mehta, Bishekh Choksey, Jayanti Nessiar, Tejas Parekh and Aarthi Talreja.
“Everybody had great fun. It is encouraging enough to have bigger celebrations next year,” Ramanan added.
Krishna Srinivasan, a part-time MBA student who is due to graduate in another six weeks, envisaged a future for the Indian student body beyond conducting Diwali celebrations. “We should now look forward to starting a business association of Indian students,” added Srinivasan who works full-time at New Jersey-based Cognizant Technologies.
