Water is one of the main components of human life. We can not live without water. According to ‘Sanatana Dharma’ , water is also revered as God called ‘Varuna Deva’(Rain God) and the ever flowing and never drying rivers (‘Jeeva Nadis’) are also worshipped as mothers. Special rituals are under taken for such rivers called ‘Pushkaram’ (occurring every 12 years for each of such rivers) during which time fresh spring water from the ground oozes in huge quantities purifying the existing waters resulting in the bringing about of salubrious air around the area. This is absolutely a geographical phenomenon.
When humans take dip in these river waters during ‘Pushkara’ ceremony it is said to have a healing effect on skin and soften the nervous disorders and in the spiritual sense it would cleanup all the sins committed until such time.(Does it mean it excludes future sins??).Never the less the positive effect felt by millions over centuries on such occasions can not be brushed aside so easily!
Last but not the least is the Sky. It is called as ‘Akasha’ in Sanskrit meaning 'Space.' The sky. Free, open space. Ether, the fifth and most subtle of the five elements. Empirically, the rarified space or ethereal fluid plasma that pervades the universe, inner and outer. Esoterically, mind, the super conscious strata holding all that exists and all that potentially exists, wherein all happenings are recorded and can be read by clairvoyants. It is through psychic entry into this transcendental akasha that cosmic knowledge is gathered, and the entire cycle of time--past, present and future--can be known. Space, akasha, in this concept is a positive substance, filled with unseen energies and intelligences, in contrast with the Western conception that space is the absence of everything and is therefore nothing in and of itself. The Upanishad describes five levels of akasha which can be yogically experienced: guna rahita akasha (space devoid of qualities); parama akasha (supreme space), maha akasha (great space), tattva akasha (space of true existence) and surya akasha (space of the sun). Edgar Cayce, known as the doctor of Holistic medicine an American by birth also agreed with these concepts of ‘Sanatana Dharma’.
Thus all the five elements are given a high status in society and revered in this tradition in India. Does such noble tradition exists in the rest of the world? Reverence to nature and maintaining ecological balance have to be understood as a vital part of any good tradition. Such is the piety of ‘Sanatana Dharma’ which has to be upheld in all ages to come for the peace and tranquility in this world and also this is the need of the present world’s crisis.
How nice it would be for the world if people all over the globe start practicing ‘Sanatana Dharma’ concepts!
