Bharat Sarath, associate professor of accountancy, expressed happiness at the enthusiasm shown by the Indian students in celebrating the Diwali festival. “I hope this is a sign of bigger and better things to come for the Association,” said Sarath, heaping praise on the Indian Graduate Student Association that organized the event. Prof. Sarath who attended the event dressed in a trendy kurta is among the three dozen faculty members who are of Indian origin at Baruch College. Prof. Sarath also happens to be the academic advisor to the student body.
Ramya Ramanan, president of the IGSA, said the Association chose to celebrate Diwali, among other reasons, to develop “a sense of belongingness” among the current and past Indian students. Ramanan, an accounting major student, hoped that the Indian students forge a stronger bond by involving themselves with more events like Diwali celebrations.
Ramanan’s hope seemed to be coming true. The event featured a social game that compelled the participants to network with each other. Many who didn’t know each other before the event were seen interacting in a friendly manner soon thereafter.
The four-hour event took off when Sarina Jain, who is widely known as the Indian Jane Fonda, began to rock the students with her catchy beats. Jain who introduced Indian bhangra dance to stay fit with her series of unique and intense workouts was a big hit among the students.
