Articles: News | Hyd gets a new match venue - Mr. Ravi Kumar Sunkara
| |
HCA, which wanted to have its own venue to avoid any controversies over ticket sharing with other sports bodies, began constructing the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium about three years ago over 27 acres of land allotted by the state government.
Though it can currently accommodate 27,000 spectators, it is expected to have a seating capacity of 55,000 on completion.
HCA is hoping that all goes smoothly Wednesday when the first match is played and the venue gets a boost.
'It is a proud moment for all of us,' said HCA president and Labour Minister G. Vinod. 'It is a dream come true for us,' added HCA secretary and former Test all rounder N. Shivlal Yadav, who also has a pavilion named after him in the stadium.
'It looks a fantastic stadium. We are honoured to play the first match here,' said South African team's coach Mickey Arthur.
The project and naming of the stadium have not been free from controversies.
