Mr.Stallman emphasised the fact that it is incorrect to assume that IT industry
employment will be negatively effected because of free software. Only a very small part
of the software industry constituting of proprietary software development might be
effected. Free software facilitates custom software development which is forms a major
part of the work done by services companies. Free software also opens doors for many
other types for jobs that are related to services.
Mr.Stallman highlighted that schools have a social responsibility to teach students to
live in a free society in which people cooperate with each other. Because free software
distributes source code, it is possible for students to learn the system completely and
contribute collectively to its improvement, something that is not possible with
proprietary software.
The event started with condolences to K. Rekha who died in an unfortunate accident.
Coming from Vignan Institute of Technology and Science, she was one of the first
volunteers in the localisation project which has produced software in Telugu including
desktop, office suite and browser. Towards the end, certificates of appreciation were
distributed to engineering college students who participated in the localisation sprint
conducted on Software Freedom Day, the 28th of September.
