I sat up excitedly as getting tickets to Gudumba Shankar, the mega movie of Pawan Kalyan was next to impossible. And a movie at 6 o clock in the morning?!!! This I had to see.
As we drove excitedly at 5 o clock today morning amidst heavy downpour of late monsoon rains asking puzzled autowallahs the way to the theatre, we knew the hype was great, the ride much more. Making our way through drenched streets and curious early birds, we breathed in the fresh air of hysterical hype.
The theatre, situated on the outskirts of Hyderabad already was filled upto the brim by eager fans in raincoats. Nothing to beat cinema fanaticism in Andhra, I mused. The rain stopped only to give way to bursting of crackers and dances by ecstatic fans in the early hours of the day.
As we elbowed our way into the theatre we locked eyes with perfect strangers and gave delightful smiles expressing the feeling, 'yes we did it'. The world it seemed was divided into two halves at that moment. The first half were us with tickets to the movie, the other half was the rest of the world ignorant to the delights of hype in Gudumba Shankar.
The movie? passable.
The manic energy and eccentric gestures of Pawan coupled with great fight sequences have made him a huge star in this part of the world, but in this movie one feels he overdid everything spoiling the fun.
The delight of the movie is charming Meera Jasmine. She is plump, short but god damn beautiful. Dressed in traditional dresses most of the time she packs a power punch presence. Quintissentially beautiful, subconsciously stimulating, she quietens the manic presence of Pawan to sensibility.
Songs are ok and comedy passable.
The story? How a cheap toddy broker falls in love and marries the girl. The cliche? a powerful liquor baron also having the same idea.
As we came out of the theatre we wondered, was that hype necessary? Except for Meera Jasmine there was nothing to see in the movie, even our hero Pawan Kalyan.
