Piping support can be defined as the elements that carry the weight from the supporting pipes following the physics rule of compression.
If the piping system lacks proper support, problems ending in the flange joints, sagging pipes, vibration, excessive movement, higher deflection, line overstress, equipment nozzle overload and faulty piping support design might arise. To avoid these problems, it is essential that the piping support design is neat.

Consider the following points for piping support design:
1. The objective of piping support design is that it supports designs and the selection of support material that helps in improving the quality of piping. Proper codes and standards laid by ASME standards are to adhere.
2. In the drawing, tag all the piping supports neatly for later identification. Organizations specializing in piping engineering have a set of detailed labeling and nomenclature given according to the length of the pipe, its height and its range. They are known as STD Pipe Supports- standard pipe supports. The factors not covered by standard pipe supports are known as SPS - Special Pipe Supports.
3. After tagging all the pipe supports, list all standard, special and temporary pipe supports in the index drawing and maintain a register.
4. As you prepare the piping fabrication isometrics, include the details of piping material, pipe support tags, pipe size, quantity, fabrication materials that would be welded or fitted.
5. Some of the support types used in piping support design are snubbers, spring hangers and other devices.
6. The support material is conducive to difficult weather conditions, vibrations and extreme temperatures.

Pipe supports material can be broadly divided into three categories –
1. Welded Attachments
2. Non-welded Attachments
3. Structural Pipe Supports
The first is of similar grade as the run pipe, the second one can be ASTM A36 or similar while the thirdone can be structural steel sections and plates.
