Raise in Politicians' salaries

The MPs had brought everything to a virtual standstill in Parliament to press for hike in their salaries. Pranab Mukherjee had to step in to bring them back to order with a promise that their demands would be met.The MPs were demanding a 5 hold hike in their salaries, allowances and perks,tax-free by the way, against 3 hold hike the Government was willing to give them.

The general refrain is; while people have been suffering with steep rise and day-today hardship, the lawmakers have decided to hike the salaries and also pension of ex-MPs."We voted them for candidates who came into public life to serve the people selflessly but, instead of serving the people, they have started serving themselves"

The question people have been asking:What have they done to deserve it? Day-after-day they disrupt the proceedings, stall the question hours and waste the precious tome of Parliament besides wasting hundreds of crores of rupees. In getting replies to their questions, huge amount is spent.

There has been a suggestion that there should be a punitive action against the MPs who disrupt proceedings. And whenever they disrupt the proceedings their allowances, salary should be deducted. This should apply to the whole House, even those who do not disrupt the proceedings, because they did not prevent their colleagues from disruption, resulting in adjournment of Parliament for the day.

Indeed this has been a most inappropriate time for Government to bring the Bill to raise MPs' salaries. It was not good for MPs' to increase their salaries when the people were suffering due to inflation and rising prices of essential commodities.

HelloSS,
I have seen your remarks on my comment.I would like to know how many intellectuals are casting their votes in the general Elections. I do not know whetrhe you are casting your vote every time or not? If there is a resentment, then they must show by casting their votes. But unfortunately the fall out is ending some where at 60-70%.In urban areas it is less than 60% casted their votes. This is because people do not want to go to the polling booth with a certain alibi. I am casting my vote since I got the voting rights to a person whom I feel useful to the society and not by Party affiliation.
I was at Patna during the General election of 2004. There people were afraid of going to Polling Booths. The roads were almost deserted on the polling day.The Parliament voted for the bill with almost unanimity and we can not do any thing to stop it.I have given my opinion whether you like it or not.It does not mean i am advising you to give up.
Every one looks for salary hike.

let us discuss on burning issues like Poverty alleviation, corruption and see solutions if we can invent.

The increase in the salaries of MPsand pension to ex-MPs would cost Government Rs.103.76 crores every year. Besides there will be a onetime expenditure of Rs 118 crores on payment of arrears of salary and pension. The increase in the daily, constituency and office expenditure allowances will cost Government an additional Rs.38.50 crores every year. Right away there will be three fold hike in salary of MPs from Rs 16,000 to Rs 50,000 along with their office expenditure is also doubled.

They have so much diversity among themselves, cutting across party lines, but now they have united in seeking a salary hike !!!

Krish Ji.. every time u include ur comment u sound as if u give up.. I prefer to rise an issue expecting that like minds would ignite the so called burning issues into more fruitful and more healthier solutions.

Some flow with river while some want to sail against... Hard but can still make an effort.. Foolish for the world but at least some1 had tried to see the impact of the reverse action..

By this Bill, the no Mp would return back in the next elections. The Left parties too opposed the salary hike and wanted the Government to work out a mechanism to fix salaries and allowances of MP's and ex-MPs'.

You are right. But who will ask them.Parliament is supreme and they are the members. They need every facility at the cost of people. The percentage of below poverty line people is increasing day by day. We are thoughing food grains after the perish in the godowns. But the Govt. is not prepared to give it to the poor,so called their vote bank.We have to live in this type of situation.
