Vitiligo, also known as leucoderma, is an embarrassing skin disease, wherein white patches -occur all over the body including face, scalp and private parts. This causes a lot of mental agony in the affected persons, especially in the youngsters. There is gradual loss of skin pigment called melanin from the layers of the skin.
Causes
It is not caused by any germs or infective agents.
The exact causative factor is not known.
Excessive thinking, worry, chronic gastric problems, improper liver functions, worms/parasites in the digestive system, aggravate 'Vitiligo'.
Burns and injuries are the other causative factors.
Heredity is also one of the factors.
Sings & Symptoms
Initially small white spots appear, and gradually develop into white patches. These can occur all over the body.
These patches are pale in the beginning, later on they become whiter with time, as the 'melanin' pigment is worn-out from the skin.
Herbal Medicines
A paste made out of Bakuchi (Psoralea corylifolia) and vinegar should be applied over the white patches and exposed to early sunrays for 15 minutes.
Ginger juice 10ml twice a day ensures proper blood supply to these white patches.
Red clay being rich in copper is effective in the patches. This should be well mixed in fresh ginger juice in equal proportion and applied over the lesions once daily.
Turmeric powder well mixed in mustard oil is also a good external application in this disorder.
The leaves of neem crushed with amla churna taken ½ to 1 teaspoonful once daily for about a month shows good results.
The decoction of amla and kher mixed with a small quantity of honey taken in the dose of 20 to 50ml once or twice daily proves very effective.
