Active Blogs | Popular Blogs | Recent Blogs Finally, we now have the right to dwell as much as you want on the GTX Titan. What performances offer it? What prospects does it open for the brand chameleon? At 950 euros, is a commercially viable product? Sit comfortably, we will attempt to answer these questions with more than 7 billion transistors in the hands ...
Before entering the heart of the benchmark, and the extent GTX Titan may well be the only real big news of the year for desktop graphics cards, AMD has made a cross on the Inspiron 1526 battery for time, perhaps would it not vain to recall a few lines issues behind this daring product.
To begin with, we note that the Titan is a 180 degree turn in the policy of the manufacturer for high quality. Indeed, so far, and like its competitor, it swore by its SLI technology, which therefore implies the use of two GPUs (or more), and which, if actually proposed performance Gross interesting, had the disadvantage of relying on software optimizations often shaky. Further evidence of this shift: the Titan is positioned tariff term in front of the GTX 690 (around 950 euros for the first, against 920 on average for the second), with the secret hope that the newcomer hunting gradually his big sister.
A long-term strategy
Obviously, at first glance, one might ask what is the interest for the brand chameleon of such a change. Titan alone, and without revealing the exact content of the Pavilion DV4 battery performance we measured, can hardly hope to compete with Ares II - or less flashy, with CrossFireX HD 7970 - even though they are an amputee part of their power by software profiles wobbly. In addition, the second option mentioned made in AMD remains commercially cheaper and more attractive thanks to the bundle of games that came with it. On the other hand, the single-GPU solution Nvidia offers low power consumption, and a small footprint ... But once again a niche high price, who cares? Just as no two Ares interest focused on an elite performance, Titan will be judged by ordinary mortals on this aspect.
Perhaps, if we consider the new map as a simple answer to Nvidia's competitor in the segment of high-end. However, (note that this is pure speculation on our part) if it is considered a weapon more global, the manufacturer will use to demonstrate expertise, the approach makes a lot of sense.
And what Nvidia would show? For example, it is able to offer a solution that allows GPU literally up the next generation of consoles (including the manufacturer will be a priori excluded), while still managing to fit in a shoe box (box that is would in a salon). Also, via the GeForce Experience, it shows that any layman can now play on Compaq Presario CQ60 PC without knowing what anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering, and through an interface as pleasant as effective (Nvidia is in this capacity in partnership with Valve on developing Big Picture).
Finally, it proves that the gaming experience will be available as well on TV as a PC or a Shield, thanks to GRID. In summary, beyond a simple product GPU, the manufacturer intends to complete a particular ecosystem, which aspires to invade your living instead of Sony and other Microsoft (which are also equipped with the competition), a hitherto unattainable goal with solutions too large and Watts-consuming ... even if the state keeps the Titan form-factor card dual-slot classic.
From theory to practice
Now the question remains: behind these beautiful theories of world conquest, the Titan she managed to prove anything? Already a visual standpoint, Nvidia has at least managed to make an impression, since the card is very just unpacked his advantage, thanks to a design worked much more than usual, and largely inspired than the GTX 690. With a size slightly larger than a Pavilion DV6000 reference GTX Titan has a wide and brushed aluminum housing, a green backlit logo and a robust cooling system that exudes quality.
On the output side, you will find a complete, consisting of two Dual Link DVI ports, an HDMI port and a DisplayPort 1.2. The power supply is itself supplied by two 8-pin connectors and 6. On its internal structure, you will find below a brief summary of the specifications Titan, as well as, for comparison, two other single-GPU cards, the GTX 680 and HD 7970 Edition GHz.
Well ... Now the stakes are raised, and the presentations are made, let's test! As usual, these are divided between synthetic benchmarks, measures temperatures, fuel consumption, noise, and field trials, a panel of representative games: Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Batman Arkham City, and a few others. One note, however: you will find, probably with a hint of disappointment that the cards that we have used as a basis of comparison are fewer than usual. In this simple reason, and that we had to clarify: this test map Titan fell full renovation of our test (which gives you an overview of the new features below), and the time Titan card was given to us, we do not have been allowed to redo all of our comparative basis. The Toshiba PA3465U-1BRS tests we were able to speak for themselves, however, remain, and will anyway be updates as and as we integrate new data in the coming days.
Then? GPU to rule them all?
Finally, the answer to THE question: is it worth the Titan performance Nvidia boasts that in recent weeks? Yes, a thousand times yes ... In fact, the course map impresses by its velocity against the existing single GPU, but its superiority is even greater when these results are compared with its consumption 370 Watts when the beast is pushed its limits. It is a fifty watts just a GTX 680, while the latter is largely overtaken in computational efficiency: on average, and all the games reviewed in the Titan displays performance increase of 40% compared to his alter ego of the "generation" before (for the record, the difference between a GTX 580 and a GTX 680 to its output stood at around 20% more). AMD side, the Inspiron 1300 battery difference with a HD 7970 Edition GHz is reduced, of course, but so is the Radeon display results down by 22% on average compared to the Titan.
However, if the GTX and Titan is essentially a single-GPU card, which is difficult considering the price range in which it is located, not to be compared to a GTX 690 on one side and a 2 of Ares other, two dual-GPU cards strongest at the moment. And the second half, if the card does not come out victorious on the raw numbers, it nonetheless impressive, and in particular, it tends to validate the strategy of the Santa Clara firm to rely on a Technology certainly less powerful on paper, but much more stable in practice SLI / CrossFireX. Stability which allows you to view overall performance involved only 6% below a GTX 690, and 8% to Ares 2, while a few moments earlier, the Titan was run over in synthetic benchmarks as 3DMark 11.
