Test: Toshiba Satellite U920T

In the format of an Ultrabook convertible tablet, Toshiba offers this U920T. Is this a good versatile machine? Some benchmarks and tapping on the screen later verdict ...

On the same concept as the Sony VAIO 11 Duo, Toshiba offers its Satellite U920T which has a screen 12.5 "16:9 sliding hiding a keyboard and a touchpad (where Sony was content with a trackpad Touch inconvenient). Thus, it is possible to use it in tablet mode or laptop mode knowing that the beast weighs 1.52 kg. The hinge mechanism introduced here seems to be more robust than Hybrid Sony. To open, simply push the screen until it stops, then pull the display to the desired angle. careful though, if it is too early screen the mechanism is blocked and the whole machine is raised. It will therefore make a habit of pushing the screen to the end, otherwise the force mechanism may take a hit.

Whether or laptop tablet position, the slab of a definition of 1366 x 768 protected by glass Gorilla Glass is fully touch on five points. The system is accurate, which makes piloting the new Windows 8 interface finger. In tablet mode, an accelerometer positioned on the screen will select the desired orientation (portrait or landscape). A button on the side of this Satellite U920T to disable this control. Open, the screen is not adjustable and you lose this functionality. The Dell XPS M1530 full keyboard of 87 keys backlit touchpad and suitable dimensions allow correct handling of the machine. Text input is nice and the chiclet keys rebound and touch, are not bad. Moreover, to improve comfort, Toshiba has added a coating "soft" to rest the wrists.

Connectivity, Toshiba offers two USB 3.0 ports, one rear and one on the side, an HDMI output, a headphone / microphone and SD card reader. The machine is also equipped with a webcam rear 3 megapixel with auto focus and another on the front for video conferencing software type. A word about the following: the XPS M1330 quality is not really there and you can not really get used to the extra picture and video. In addition, the rear sensor is integrated on the screen, we can not take a picture / video in tablet mode, which is quite disabling.

For the rest of the connectivity, Toshiba has (almost) integrated the latest technologies in this field. And we note the presence of a WiFi chip Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 that will support more WiFi a / b / g and n, Bluetooth 4.0 and WiDi. However, no 5 GHz model, or NFC, although the latter uses are still very limited. Note also some recurring problems on WiFi which randomly provided insufficient flow. After confirming that we have many latest drivers and tried the machine in several different environments WiFi, it turned out that the problem frequently came without explanation. Hopefully it affects our Latitude E6400 test model has already been the attempts other editorial 'before ours, and not units shipped to retailers. A priori, after research, this issue is not ascended into the user forums or reviews customers in stores. Rather we are reassured.

To control this U920T Satellite, Toshiba has opted for an Intel processor, in our version numbered 109, Core i3-3217U clocked at 1.8 GHz, which is based on 4 GB of RAM shared with the HD 4000 chipset . There is therefore no dedicated GPU here and only serve to fan the processor and chipset. Speaking ventilation, it is fairly quiet when we seek the little machine (office and surfing). But as soon as the power demand is a little more concrete, the Toshiba panics and rises above 45 dbA in our lab which the sound pressure is measured at 33.8 dBA (measured at 30 cm from the computer) . It will not pass unnoticed in an open space will blow when the maximum of its possibilities. On the other hand, video playback, the blower engages often intermittently. Strange, we have not observed this behavior on other competitive models equipped with the same processor used video ...

Despite this enough wind, even video playback, the Latitude E5500 battery life is average with 4 hours and 3 minutes in this type of use and 5 hours and 18 minutes in office consultation with web pages, emails and drafting documents Office. That's correct, even with a screen of 12.5 "bigger than Sony. However, we must also take into account that we pass a Core i5 Core i3 here.

The versatility comes at a cost ...

Overall, the Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS is properly assembled with choice of materials that flatter the eye. However, in everyday life, this Toshiba does not appear to adequately fulfill its mission. Format Ultrabook convertible tablet with the slide system poses some problems. In tablet mode, the size of 12.5 inches is too large for use with one hand. Instinctively, it is positioned in portrait mode for easier and it is placed on the knees ... but the slab is not well defined in the sense in height (768 pixels), the consultation web pages and other Excel spreadsheets are not the most pleasant.

Same observation mode Ultrabook, the opening has a larger keyboard than its direct competitor (Sony VAIO Duo for recall), but the mechanism is a bit too tedious to implement. It will necessarily have both hands free to operate it. However, the ability to tilt the screen is a real bonus here. Finally, the rear camera does nothing in itself and its location is not the most appropriate. A true when a sensor as the high-end smartphones on these machines? In our opinion, Toshiba still work if he wants to convince future customers with this kind of hybrid PC.
