Test: Kindle Fire HD 8.9''

Slowly but surely, Amazon continues its presence in the Dell XPS M1530 tablet market by offering this time a version "large format" of the Kindle Fire HD. Has to be done in a single pass through the box XL or a real new product?

A few months ago, we talked about all the good that we thought the Kindle Fire HD, a 7-inch tablet by Amazon thinking and excellent for everything related to reading content. Sold € 199, it certainly suffered an interface not always ideal and oriented primarily to the content of the e-commerce site, but offered very good performance and attractive design.

A few months later, Amazon decides to decline again with its Kindle range this larger version of the Fire HD, now equipped with a screen of 8.9'' to the definition of 1920x1200.

Side look and design, we are on familiar ground: unsurprisingly Fire HD 8.9'' contains every feature the XPS M1330 appearance of Fire HD original, with its edges still a bit too large, but its grip very nice, thanks to rubber coating on the back. Suddenly, the sensations are good, it does not slip and is very soft to touch. Compared to the Kindle 7'', this new format is also more pleasing to the eye and gives an impression of 16/9 more pronounced. Suddenly, the feeling of being in front of a digital picture frame, as it could be the case in the previous model, disappears.

As for size and weight, they are consistent with what is on the Latitude E5500 market in this price range, it is correct to say, nothing more. With 560 grams on the scale and 8.8 mm thick (it is slightly thinner than the Fire HD), 8.9'' is certainly not the most refined tablet and lightest on the market, but remains quite convincing on this point.

Screen: the main argument?

In terms of connectivity, again, nothing new: we find the classic micro USB port for charging, a mini HDMI port for connection to a TV, and a 3.5 mm jack. Note that as the Kindle Fire 7'' HD, it is frankly a shame not to be able to charge the tablet by connecting to a E6400 Battery PC and the only salvation always comes from the outlet. Another defect again present here: the strange position lighting buttons and volume still pretty hard to use. Even if, suddenly, they blend well in the design of the device, discretion dessert everyday use.

Where this new version of the Kindle Fire HD stands out more than the former, of course, is on the Dell Latitude E6500 screen, both larger and with better definition. We switch from 1280x800 to 1920x1200 at 216 ppi to 254 ppi, all on an IPS panel of almost 9 inches. And we must admit that the result of this expansion is very convincing, since we are left with significant visual comfort, while avoiding too large slab, which could reduce the comfort grip.

This format 8.9'' in any case seems ideal for viewing content, especially videos, especially the display quality is generally very good, the colors - so slightly saturated Super AMOLED - sometimes are beautiful despite a lack of homogeneity, and the maximum brightness allows optimal use in all circumstances, as its very wide viewing angles. There still a fairly strong persistence, which is particularly noticeable when using the carousel (the equivalent of multitasking on the tablet), the icons then leaving a trail quite visible. Same for fast scrolling images on a video, which is not perfectly clear. Anyway, in this Dell Studio 1558 price range and in this format, the screen of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is very satisfying.

3D limit, extra independently

During our test of the Kindle Fire 7'' HD, we noted very satisfactory autonomy, which ensured a dozen hours of use without flinching. The situation is the same here, see best. Playing a 720p video (max brightness, WLAN on) runs for almost 8 am, a good hour longer than his little sister and can ultimately Inspiron 1300  approaching 11h autonomy. Beware, however, 3D games, which seem to consume much more quickly and are drop the charge.

Moreover, the 3D performance of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9'' seem to be one of its weaknesses. If the score is correct in Epic Citadel (45 fps), it is only 1249 in AnTuTu Benchmark. This is much less than the majority of other tablets on the market and it shows on some recent games like Real Racing 3. Apart from this defect, the Dell Studio 1537 performance of the Fire HD 8.9 are quite irreproachable. Web browsing is smooth and precise, and the original browser (currently single) is pleasant to use.

The Amazon OS (based on Android) is meanwhile completely identical to that found on previous models of Kindle Fire, with the same qualities and the same defects. If the Dell XPS M1210 media is always highlighted and pleasant to browse some essential Android features are missing. A good point, however, on the Amazon App store increasingly rich and offers provided many common applications with Google Play Store.

The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is therefore a very successful iteration of Fire HD and provides a comfortable reading undeniable due to its screen size and ideal ergonomics. And if it does not clearly revolutionized the Kindle range, it offers a quality / size / price very interesting. It's simple, for 269 € (as long as one accepts the suggestions on Amazon Compaq Presario CQ60 Purchase the lock screen), you can hardly find a more convincing 9'' tablet on the market.
