| Only business calls do have some manners. Other than that any personnel call one has to be careful. If you ask directly ' Is melvin there ' probably the reply will be go to hell. People are distressed bt anonymous calls. That is the reason phones are developed to know the caller other end.
It is minimum courtesy to wish on the phone, say Good morning / afternoon /evening. Then the voice is important which you can't get by reading the subject. Finally it should appear that the caller is enquiring about someone whom whereabouts are unknown. That's the reason the reply was was so hard.
Ultimately a business call is much different from a personnel call. Why not use the same technique that makes a grand success.
