One scientific reason about the 'bottu' goes like this....
The reason for bottu which is supposed to be of red colo(u)r originally is to absorb all the energy of Sun except red which it reflects because of the intensity of red in the spectrum. Like somebody mentioned, the part of the forehead between the eyebrows is an area of high concentration for the brain and the mind.
