Dear James: Thanks for taking time to opine on the touching incident that provokes and flusters fellow Indians for the effected. I recognize the point that there are/were many event(s) that led to current disharmony, however, I fail to reconcile on such an egregious incident. I only want to be careful here, in that, we as Indians assert our right, be recognized for our distinctions and challenge when provoked. It is shear recklessness of these tyrannical authorities to swoop on the humble, legally right residents. It is not uncommon to find a "few," who bypass the legal domain, nevertheless that is no excuse for being offensive, insult and humiliate the remaining. James, I wonder if it were to be the case of Americans, would that incident dare to happen?? No surprise it will not happen.... Why should India and its citizens not be treated as an IT Super Power. Moreover, Indians are contributing to the local economy and helping Malayasia in myriad ways as you point out. So, with that said I(read as Indians) only seek to be respected, honored and treated with dignity. Also, India has done a right thing in exerting its discretion because no assertion should not be marked as cowardice. India and Indians today should be well treated, regarded and respected for what they are. I want fellow Indians to come out and voice their dissatisfaction about this incident so that it will not happen again whether in Malayasia or any other country. I only wish that foreigners think twice before committing atrocities on Indians. Thanks Raj

Dear Mr.Reddy, I'm a Malaysian Indian and I would like to express deep regret over the inconvenience experienced by a group of Indian nationals, mostly Information Technology (IT) professionals, who were badly handled during a raid at the Palm Court condominium in Brickfields,Malaysia on March 9. Here I would like to mention the root cause of the problem and the steps taken by our goverment in which the authorities took their time to carry out the probe, and even there was concern among many top leaders in Malaysia, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohammad and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, at the developments taking place in India. The Home Minister of Malaysia, admitted there were shortcomings in carrying out the operations and on behalf of the police apologised over the manner in which it handled officials from the Indian High Commission. During the operation, 191 people were detained, of whom 155 produced their identification documents while 36 others did not. The nationals comprised 186 Indians, four Pakistanis and a Myanmar. I would like to say that there are important lessons to learn from the raid. Such as that the police should have involved Immigration officers as it concerned verifying travel documents wherein in the raid on these Indian IT professionals, the Immigration Department was not included in the operation initially, leading to a delay in the inspection of documents, furthermore the police did not take along any identification document equipment such as the ultraviolet light apparatus, resulting in the documents having to be checked manually. As the Home Minister of Malaysia admitted, several of the professional visit passes were defaced and to compensate for this, the Home Ministry, in its report, promised to send a team of Immigration officers to assist the affected workers in obtaining new ones. Mr.Reddy, for your kind information, the raid was carried out following complaints from residents in the Palm Court condominium (where these Indian IT professionals are staying)and there have been similar sentiments from apartment owners in other parts of the city. Concerned about the safety and prestige of their apartments, they complained of large number of tenants crammed into three-room units and in one case, they complained of Africans who vandalised lifts and once, even urinated inside the lift. In all fairness, Malaysians are as guilty as foreigners in lacking civic virtues but their sentiments are due largely to the presence of black sheep among the foreigners.I'm truly understand the unhappiness among the Indian professionals detained because they had valid documents and worse, their explanations were ignored. An estimated 40,000 Indian expatriates work in Malaysia, including IT professionals in the Multimedia Super Corridor, and engineers, doctors, academics and executives involved in joint ventures. But with the statement and apology by the Home Ministry, India should now let the matter rest as there are larger interests that can benefit both countries and given the long bond of friendship, both sides should be able to rise above this unfortunate incident. There have been many happy memories from the Malaysia-India ties and such ties should be emphasised. Thank you. From : D.James Rao
