| nice article mr.vachaspathi... just now i have gone through it...
but some small corrections... don't take this in a negative sence... just i wanted to correct few things... the word "Atma" stands for SPIRIT not the SOUL. I think u might have heard the word "spiritual people"(people who r lead by spirit in them). this word can help u understand my point. There are many functions of the spirit in us. God sent the spirit to guide the man to guide into his way, to comfort tha man in his trails n temptations, to communicate or to have continual communion with god.
Human being is a threefold union of the spirit, soul and body.
Bones, muscles, blood and etc etc... make the body.
The soul consists of three components: 1)intellect to think, learn, and understand; 2)emotion to love someone like parents, brothers, sisters, husband or wife, friends and relations; and 3)will-power to make decisions.
The spirit is also made of three components. The first one is conscience or the inward voice which warns us before we commit any sin by thought, word and deed. We have to kill our onscience before committing any sin. Supposing I want to tell a lie; my conscience warns me saying, "Be careful, do not tell a lie". But I tell my conscience, "You keep quiet". This means that by bringing death to spirit we commit sin. The second component is the inward longing to know the Unseen. Every human being has a desire to know God and his Creator, where He is and how to find Him. Thirdly, we have institution by which a thought comes suddenly to go somewhere, or to buy something, or to do something without knowing the reason.
The evil things caste, religion etc, etc are secondary evil things. Selfishness, proud, hatred, anger, bitterness, Jealousy, suspicion and self-will, etc these are the primary evil things and are the root cause of every evil event. They will burry the spirit in us and weakens its functions and also will put it to death. Without life in our spirit we will loose the communion with god. God is a light for us. When there is no light in us our soul will be darkened. We misuse our intellect and emotions as our soul is darkened. When our soul is darkened we will bring defilement to our body by misusing its members.

Our Geeta explains about the link beteween body and soul. Chandra Gupta did not agree with the function and existance of soul. Can we say life and soul is same or they different? Egg consists of life but who knows when does a soul enters the body ?

u talked of something our country is built on- atma- good. even i belive in atma-bhasha.i hve one wonderful experience when i tried to act by soul. i will mail u that someday.
