These articles are useful for sociology and anthropology students and to people who are interested in society and culture in general.Arranged marriages and Un-arranged marriages - Marriages in many countries are still arranged by the parents, based on such criteria as status, economics and religious considerations. Exogamy is marriage outside one's own kin group or community. Endogamy is marriage within some group or caste. For example, in India there are arranged marriages based on caste and sub-caste (jati), which keeps the social stratification system in place. In other regions of the world, including the United States, there are towns that primarily have only a few surnames, because people marry within the community. Monogamy is a one husband, one wife marriage; Polygyny is a one husband, more than one wife marriage; Polyandry is a one wife, more than one husband marriage. Monogamy is the predominant model, but there are countries where polygyny is practiced, and the amount of wives often reflects the wealth and status of the man. Polyandry is also still practiced, but in less than 1% of the total world societies. Family types: nuclear family which includes one generation, usually a man, wife and their children. The extended family includes more than one generation under one roof, usually grandparents and sometimes grandchildren. Over 50% of the world's population lives in extended families. On the positive side extended families allow a division of labor, a closeness of emotional contact, and a greater financial security for its members. An example of the utility of the extended family is the idea of grandparents in an agricultural society watching young children while the younger adults work in the fields. On the otherhand, the rituals and hierarchies in an extended family can create serious tensions, such as the power relationships between mother-in-laws and daughter-in-laws, or the recognition of maturity and responsibility from an elder to a younger generation.
