Articles: My Thoughts | Who is a Brahmin? | |
| The word ‘Brahmin’ can be interpreted in vertical (spiritual) as well as lateral (social) planes. In spiritual sense, every ‘being’ (that includes not only human, but other animate and even inanimate beings) is a potential Brahmin.
But, in social plane, certainly everybody cannot be a Brahmin. Our Purusha Suktha describes society as an indivisible organic entity, with defined division of labour among its constituents for the smooth functioning of the society. In its original spirit, this division was meant to be non-hierarchical. However, in due course, certain social evils emerged, in the name of caste, leading to the exploitation of the weak.
Even today, right from a small business company to the big corporate giants and governments, every functioning unit follows division of labour. While Brahmins may be compared to the ‘think tanks’ of an organization, Kshatriya constitute the executive, and Vaisya the fund raisers. Finally Sudras correspond to the actual workforce directly involved in the production.
Like it or not, we all not only accept, but religiously practise such ‘caste system’ in our workplace daily, without qualms. So, what is this ‘Egalitarian Anti-Brahminism’ we dream about?
