| The phobia against communists is widespread. However some facts may need to be mentioned here.
Mr. M.V.Ramadas, an old Telugu colleague of S.A.Dange (he is in his 80s now) told me in Bombay how the communist-led workers' unions in Bombay in the 20s & 30s compelled mill owners to introduce 8 hr working shifts, productivity-linked bonus, medical leave and compensation, adequate holidays, dearness allowance etc. Each had to be bitterly fought for step by step, year after year with many workers dying penniless. The benefits are of course enjoyed by the whole salaried class today. Some of them, out of ignorance, consider it fashionable to bash 'commies'. There was nothing 'democratic' about the capitalist attitude towards workers in the earlier days.
Earlier, after 1917, the fear of Soviet style revolution prompted all western nations to quickly implement welfare laws for their own workers which ultimately benefited the entire salaried segment.
Newspapers like Eenadu occasionally feature the profile of an aged and selfless political worker who continues to live in penury. I am not surprised to note that most of them belong to the old CPI or CPM. Since Eenadu is not particularly in favour of leftists, there must be some truth in what they report.
Organized and unorganized working class forms a very large and essential part of modern Indian society and political parties like CPI, CPM safeguard their interests against rapacious capitalism. There may not be anything 'fiery red' about these groups but I think they all do encourage rationalism and materialistic thinking, among various other things.
As for basic info, I think someone like Mr. D.Paparao is more competent to write about communism and its history in India.
