Articles: Devotion | Significance of 'Bindi' | |
| It's true indeed that 'bindi' is quite significant in religious perspective. Although the word 'bindi' is often substituted by 'kumkum' or 'sindhoor' in this modern age, a clear distinction exists between these three words. 'Bindi' (or 'bottu') is the name given to that red dot whereas 'kumkum' and 'sindhoor' are two different materials with which the dot is made. Chemically, 'kumkum' is red turmeric powder essentially consisting of mercuric sulfide and 'sindhoor' is made up of zinc oxide and dye. Although both 'kumkum' and 'sindhoor' are treated as auspicious, 'sindhoor' especially is supposed to be worn by married women on the center parting of their hair.
