Posted by: Dora Babu At: 19, Nov 2007 4:13:22 AM IST Mr. Ramaiah used a local saying 'eat fruits but don't cut the fruit-giving tree' to oppose globalisation. Has he seen anybody cutting a tree without eating its fruits? Ramaiah's writings suggest that he is prejudiced against globalisation and capitalism.
He thinks they (Americans?) preserve their own resources and exploit that of the others. He is apparently referring to the oil producing middle-east countries. America buys oil as it is cheaper than producing fully in its own country. Arab nations have nothing but oil and without buyers they can't survive. Its a principle of international trade.
He advocated 'preserve natural resources, don't destroy them.' If we follow his argument, we have to stop Singareni collieries in order to preserve them. Similarly, all the irrigation projects in India and AP should not have taken place as to fulfill each project villagers in several villages were displaced and rehabilitated in other areas. He talks about chemicals and poison gases and gives an example of 30year old Bhopal incident. Probably, he is not aware that the GOI has its own rules and regulations to control multinational industries set up in India.
He also thinks that developed countries are spoiling the language and culture of less developed countries by forcing their own culture. He gives an example of Telengana Telugu criticised by Circar Telugus. He should know that American English is not King's (Queen's) English and it is criticised by the Britishers. It doesn't mean that the American English is bad or Americans are opposed to the Britishers on the language issue. He should know that Canadian Englsh, Australian English, and Indian English are all different. Differences are not for destruction but for development in different ways like Circar Telugu, Rayalaseema Telugu, Nellore Telugu, and Telengana Telugu. All these will enrich the language and not destroy any one of the regional languages.
He should make an objective study of globalisation. Probably he is not aware that USA is suffering from globalisation because cheaper goods from various countries are sold in the USA at the expense of its workers. India stands lowest in globalisation as it stands 2nd to 4th from below. China enjoyed the greatest benefit by its cheap exports.
He also thinks that America is destroying other countries by its nuclear reactors. It is very difficult to import a nuclear reactor because of many international problems. For a number of years India fails to get nuclear reactors because of restrictions. There is no question of America is using chemicals and poisonous gases to kill people in other countries. Ramaiah is imagining about these.
