On my part I have been supporting 2 Girls every year for their education - I am also part of the Telugupeople Foundation .. http://www.telugupeople.org which is very active in providing basic education to hundreds of children. If you are keen you can get started with that .. select one or two students ( probably girls) of your choice and you can help them the way you want. I strongly believe Educating the girls solves 50% of their problems! A major problem all women irrespective of educational qualifications, social status and even age - are facing is Eve-Teasing, which is reaching to new unacceptable heights every day. Public safety of women is another issue in India. As I said earlier, many of the teenaged males are not mature enough to accept women as humans in the society in India. If you can think of any creative ways to tackle this, I will be the first one to support you ... * Be it a website to start a fight against eve-teasers ( It can be an anonymous site to start with - so that the identity of the people running the site is concealed and they feel safe) * May be openly black-listing the prominent eve-teasers and eve-attackers * Involving the parents of boys and girls of every colony to check this menace. Parents association can work wonders * Not waiting for the Govt to do something, but doing it ourselves * Some kind of support for Widowed/Cheated/Divorced women and Single mothers - may be some technical training ( many NGOs are already doing this .. btu one more will not hurt) * A really tough one - Educating the society about the need to treat girls with respect ( Society means both men and women) -- ALL THIS MUST BE HAPPENING WITHOUT BLAMING MEN FOR THE FAILURES OF THE WOMEN .. NO NAXAL-FEMINIST STUFF PLEASE! -- (One basic principle: Don't give them money or food - Show them a way to earn it) If you are willing to take the lead and help the people fill their dark rooms with light ( Mind you, you are not doing it .. you are just helping them do it) ... YOU HAVE MY SUPPORT! I was the founder President of a registered organization called SHIFT, and some of the above activities can be taken up by them. We badly need volunteers - I shall give you the contact details of the local coordinators ( at Hyderabad ) if you want to get started today. We tried it once but failed because we didnt have enough man/woman power to handle it!
