Articles: My Thoughts | Our Surnames | |
| Dear Sir, A very interesting article on surnames. On such obscure suramnes such as Vepa , Sonti, Burra etc, one thing is common, most them are for erstwhileNorthern Circars and as far the surname Vepa is concerned, according to family lore an iterant Maharastrian Brahmin who came to Bhimlipatnam and settled down to take up a job at the British East India factory there, sometime around early eighteenth century (circa 1700). He was of Koundanysa Gothra and it was said that there was a Neem Tree in the house and hence came the name !
Vepa K. Sadasivam

In fact the truth Ghajani is a place it's not person name. His name is Mohammad but you will find many with this name so, he was calle " Mohammad Ghjani". If a student answers only with " Ghajani " do you give marks to him ?

There are many differences between south and north including the way we write surname ( family )and people's name. North Indians write the person name first and then the family name last. South Indians write family name first and then person name. Those who did higher studies else where will observe this difference.
In Kerala Nambudripad, Pillai, Nair etc., are the family names ( surnames). In Kerala mass religion change took place. There after you will find hundreads of George, thousands of Varghese. So, agian they lost identity and resumed by Cochin George, or Trichur George or Kozikode Varghese.
