Articles: My Thoughts | Silence is not ignorance - Mrs. sharmila Sanka

'For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.' so quoted a great being. Usage of language opens our mind letting others to read us. Our speech needs to be worthy and meaningful. Our language plays a vital role in depicting ourselves. Our words have immense power leading it to take the form of practicality, be it good or bad. Our expression should be situational and we should not waste our speeach in uttering useless, worthless and meaningless words. Silence is better than speaking non-sense.
Silence in the worldly sense is being quiet and calm, speak only when necessary. Silence is not ignorance. A silent person doesn’t mean he is ignorant and not brainy. In fact chances are that he will be smart enough to grasp things fast as he doesn’t waste much energy in talking uselessly. We all talk limitlessly the whole day. Imagine the amount of energy being consumed by our endless speech. A silent person reserves all this energy and utilises it for a better purpose, be it to sharpen his brain or memory power for which all the educated yearn for.
It is not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion that makes horseraces. Sometimes we unnecessarily argue for a lot for things which we think we are very right and sure. Argument requires atleast two persons. Both of them think they are right and keep arguing coming to no conclusions. What a waste of energy? Argument never ends due to ego. Ego breeds endless argument. Knowledge breeds worthy and conclusive discussion. Never argue with a fool.
Spectators can’t find the difference. Endless argument can lead to anger. Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame. Even if one is sure the other person is wrong, it is first better to take a chance to convince the other person. If he is not convinced, stop arguing and give a break to the discussion. Be the first to prove you are not a fool. Prove him the next time in black and white that you are not wrong. Preserve your energy by keeping silent. Silence is the argument carried out by other means. Your confidence and self-satisfaction will boost up when you give a break to the endless and blind argument.
For good or ill, your conversation is your advertisement. Every time you open your mouth, you let the world look into your mind.
I have often regretted my speech, never my silence. So said Bruce Barton.
