Articles: Devotion | Hanuman in RED - Mr. Srikanth Chintala
| |
As we all know, Lord Hanuman is one of the most popular Gods in Hinduism. Hanuman is known for his super human personality, shaped by the strength of celibacy, humility, selflessness, unsurpassed devotion, determination, fearlessness and an extraordinary commitment to work for the divine. Hanuman's temples are found everywhere in India, in towns and cities, on the hills, in the forests and most difficult places. In all the temples, you should have observed one thing common in his idols. They are smeared with Sindhoora (Red Lead) and oil, a symbol of life and strength. Does applying the Sindhoora has any reason behind? Is there any explanation in the epics?
According to a popular myth, once when Sita was applying sindoora to her hair, Hanuman asked her the reason for doing so. She replied that by applying Sindoora, she ensured a long life for her husband. The more sindoora she applied, the longer Rama's life would be. The devoted Hanuman then smeared his entire body with Sindoora, in an effort to ensure Rama's immortality. Hence Hanuman's idol is always daubed with sindoora.
